Umbria Blog | Walking with Anime Pioniere

I often receive newsletters and activities from the Oasi La Valle, a nature reserve at Lake Trasimeno and a paradise for bird watchers. This time I found an invitation in my mailbox to join a walk organised by a fairly new organisation called Anime Pioniere. They organise walks in nature often in lesser known areas along the Umbria Tuscany border: Trasimeno, Cortona, Città di Castello, San Sepolcro.

Sunday the 12th of March the morning started at the Oasi La Valle where we witnessed the ringing of birds and where the walk started. 6 km, not too much height difference, hence also adapted for families with children like ourselves. We climbed the hill and over the hills’ ridges we walked from San Savino to San Feliciano. Of course we finished the walk with a small lunch, a good Italian habit. We had some antipasti and fried fish from the lake with the local fishermen.

We paid euro 15 p.p. for the tour at the Oasi La Valle, the walk and the light lunch.

It was a wonderful early spring day. Here is an impression:

Do you enjoy a walk in nature with trained guides in mostly undiscovered parts of Umbria and Tuscany? Follow the Anime Pioniere: they organise interesting walks all year round, mostly on Sunday or on Italian bank holidays. We were quite a group with almost 50 participants, all Italians. They hope they will also have tourists to join them during the summer period. During the walk we learned about the area, its history and its fauna. They also speak English. It is recommended to wear proper shoes for walking and also ask for the difficulty when making a reservation, especially when you have kids.

Have fun!

Umbria Blog | Villa in Spello

The glorious hills of Umbria are slowly but surely changing to their green colour, the mimosa is blooming everywhere, Spring is in the air! March is still a period of very unstable weather, but the temperatures are pleasant and the days begin to get longer.

Many of you already know that we rent out villas in Umbria through our website and we always look for new holiday rentals. Last week we were invited by Massimo and Roberta for a visit to their cosy and modern villa in Spello. Massimo comes originally from Rome and Roberta is born in Foligno. They live on the property in their own separate house, and re-styled the villa they used to live in. We really loved the house! Also the swimming pool is particular with its black colour. From the garden and the upstairs windows you have a beautiful view towards Assisi and Spello. The house is set in the valley below Spello. There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms in the villa. The house sleeps 6+1 people. There’s a car park and flat garden with barbecue.

This villa has in ideal position to explore Umbria. Visiting places like Assisi, Spello, Montefalco, Bevagna and Spoleto is easy to do. There also is a cycle path nearby connecting Spoleto and Assisi.

We will soon add this villa to our website, this is just a preview. You’ll like it.

Roberta and Massimo are very kind and they hope to welcome you in Umbria. Already interested? Ask us!

Umbria Blog | Grape Harvest at Il Torrione

The Italian word for the grape harvest is “vendemmia”. The vendemmia calendar in Umbria and South Tuscany is in late September, early October. In other parts of Italy this may be different, but early to mid fall is the period in Umbria and Tuscany.

In September we’ve had good weather in Umbria. Antonio, the wine maker and owner of Il Torrione, started with harvesting early October. The reason to start later was to get higher sugar levels and lower acidity in the grapes for a better wine production.

Il Torrione is an agriturismo with apartments, swimming pool, vineyards and olive groves. Il Torrione produces wine (Rosso di Montefalco wine, Sagrantino wine, Passito red/white IGT) and extra vergine olive oil.

At Il Torrione they all hand pick the grapes. This traditional old method is better for the wine quality than machine-harvesting.

A hail storm hit late August and unfortunately many grapes were destroyed, but it wasn’t a total loss, fortunately.

First they harvested the Trebbiano Spoletino. This grape is a typical grape from the area. This white wine has an orange color. How come?

Generally for a white wine it is not necessary to separate the stems from the grape, the fruit is pressed immediately. But this is not the case here. They leave the skin of the grapes in the must.

The fermentation and maceration of the wine is in stainless steel tanks for about 45 days. After 45 days, the skins will be removed from the juice and the aging in the tanks will be about 6 months. This is the reason why this white wine is “Orange” and not white. This wine is an IGT wine, which means that this particular wine comes from a specific wine producing area.

Il Torrione is a wonderful location among vineyards and olive groves. The three apartments with swimming pool are a small paradise. La Vigna apartments has wonderfuls views over the surrounding olive groves and grape vines. Just picture your self sipping a good glass of Sagrantino wine made by Il Torrione and looking over the green landscape.

You can book these apartments through Villa in Umbria. Antonio does not live on the property. Devis is the caretaker of La Vigna and Antonio’s right hand. He takes care of the agriturismo and its guests.

La Vigna is a lovely holiday location in the green heart of Italy, Umbria.
