Umbria Blog | I Primi d’Italia in Foligno

Every year at the end of September the food festival I Primi D’Italia takes place in Foligno. A good reason to visit this often underrated town in the centre of Umbria. It was pretty crowded on Sunday afternoon, but very cozy. Throughout the city there are designated places to taste all kinds of primi (pasta or risotto), either from a particular region or from a famous chef. You pay at the counter €3 to €8 euro to have 1 to 3 different primi.

Are you in autumn in Umbria, then go to this festival for a less touristic experience, that is… few foreign tourists, a lot of Italians though.

Foligno itself is very much worth it. It is a small livable city in the plain between Assisi and Spoleto, easily accessible from the motorway or by train. We previously wrote about its Cathedral and Palazzo Trinci.

Near Foligno is the famous wine village of Montefalco where you can stay in modern apartments, ideal for two people and within walking distance of the village.

Every year in June and in September there also is a medieval festival not to be missed in Foligno: the quintana.

Pasta Amatriciana for Amatrice

Every day in the newspaper, or on television we still see images and interviews with journalists, politicians and locals about the earthquake on 24 August. Amatrice, Accumoli and Arquata del Tronto are destroyed. Also buildings in Norcia, Umbria have been damaged. Many people who survived the earthquake live now in tents, but will soon move to hotels and institutions before winter sets in.

In many restaurants in Italy, and in Umbria, you can order a pasta “Amatriciana”. Amatriciana is a typical pasta-dish originally from the village Amatrice based on tomatoes, pecorino, guanciale (cured pork cheek), white wine, onion and peperoncino. Amatriciana is prepared with spaghetti or also penne (short pasta).

On Sunday October 2, 2016 I participated in the half marathon of Foligno, Umbria. We started and finished in the centre of Foligno, and in between ran through the wonderful Umbrian countryside around Foligno. The trail is flat and also ideal for walking or biking.

This race is every year on the last day of the event I Primi d’Italia. I Primi d’Italia is a popular food festival that focuses on “primi piatti” (polenta, rice, pasta and soup). During this event many top chefs all over Italy come over for food tastings, cooking demonstrations and cooking courses. It attracts a lot of visitors. I finished the race at midday and I hunkered for a good pasta. I decided to go to the “Villaggio della Amatriciana” for a Pasta Amatriciana. At the festival there were about 13 “food villages” for tastings. I could also go to the “Villaggio del Riso” or the “Villaggio della Polenta” but I felt that a little contribution for the rebuilding of the earthquake area’s was appropriate. I decided to spend my money for charity, for Amatrice!

The Pasta Amatriciana I had was delicious, I ran in the half marathon of Foligno, and gave my humble contribution for charity! I returned home satisfied.

Foligno pasta event I primi d’Italia

It has been a while since I visited Foligno. In 2011, I went to the event La Notte Rosa in Foligno, Umbria. It was crowded with people strolling around, children playing and live music until the early hours. An excellent atmosphere.

In Foligno there are quite some shops and nice restaurants. Foligno is well known by the Umbrians, it is close to Montefalco and Bevagna. It is not far from a few apartments we rent, like Il Mulino and A Montefalco apartments. The town is worth a visit for its unexpected monuments and also for some shopping. I think it is the real Umbria, not yet spoiled by lots of tourists.

From September 25 to 28, 2014 there was I Primi d’Italia. An event dedicated to “pasta” and first courses in general. You could taste over 100 new recipes and see chefs working their food art. Interesting!

I met an old friend from Terni @ Central Bar, Piazza della Rebubblica. We decided to taste some Umbrian specialties (truffle) and south Italian specialties (from Puglia). Not only pasta dishes, but also rise, polenta, gnocchi and grilled meat! Yummy!
