Every year at the end of September the food festival I Primi D’Italia takes place in Foligno. A good reason to visit this often underrated town in the centre of Umbria. It was pretty crowded on Sunday afternoon, but very cozy. Throughout the city there are designated places to taste all kinds of primi (pasta or risotto), either from a particular region or from a famous chef. You pay at the counter €3 to €8 euro to have 1 to 3 different primi.
Are you in autumn in Umbria, then go to this festival for a less touristic experience, that is… few foreign tourists, a lot of Italians though.
Foligno itself is very much worth it. It is a small livable city in the plain between Assisi and Spoleto, easily accessible from the motorway or by train. We previously wrote about its Cathedral and Palazzo Trinci.
Near Foligno is the famous wine village of Montefalco where you can stay in modern apartments, ideal for two people and within walking distance of the village.
Every year in June and in September there also is a medieval festival not to be missed in Foligno: the quintana.
The glorious hills of Umbria are slowly but surely changing to their green colour, the mimosa is blooming everywhere, Spring is in the air! March is still a period of very unstable weather, but the temperatures are pleasant and the days begin to get longer.
Many of you already know that we rent out villas in Umbria through our website and we always look for new holiday rentals. Last week we were invited by Massimo and Roberta for a visit to their cosy and modern villa in Spello. Massimo comes originally from Rome and Roberta is born in Foligno. They live on the property in their own separate house, and re-styled the villa they used to live in. We really loved the house! Also the swimming pool is particular with its black colour. From the garden and the upstairs windows you have a beautiful view towards Assisi and Spello. The house is set in the valley below Spello. There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms in the villa. The house sleeps 6+1 people. There’s a car park and flat garden with barbecue.
This villa has in ideal position to explore Umbria. Visiting places like Assisi, Spello, Montefalco, Bevagna and Spoleto is easy to do. There also is a cycle path nearby connecting Spoleto and Assisi.
We will soon add this villa to our website, this is just a preview. You’ll like it.
Roberta and Massimo are very kind and they hope to welcome you in Umbria. Already interested? Ask us!
UmbriaTopWines is an association for wine producers in Umbria. Together they travel all over the world to present their TOP wines. Last weekend a few wine producers of this association were present at the Bellavita Food & Wine Expo in Amsterdam RAI.
Il Torrione is a small wine producer whose owner is Antonio. He originally comes from Rome but he is very passionate about Umbrian wines. His estate in Gualdo Cattaneo comprises 2 hectares of vineyards. He produces about 1500 – 2000 bottles of Sagrantino di Montefalco and 7000 bottles of Rosso di Montefalco wine. The wines he produces are of high quality, one can taste his passion.
During the Bellavita Expo many people enjoyed the wines of Il Torrione. Especially the Bianco IGT (100% Trebbiano Spoletino). Not only because of the taste but also for it’s colour orange. Also the Rosso di Montefalco (70% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot and 15% Sagrantino) and the Sagrantino Passito (100% Sagrantino) were very much appreciated.
The Rosso di Montefalco 2012 wine was listed to be qualified by a jury. During the presentation of the Italian wines, Il Torrione received a qualification of 3 stars, which is the best qualification you can get at the Bellavita Expo!
Umbria has beautiful wines that are really worth tasting. Especially the Sagrantino wine is very special.
Curious about the wines of Il Torrione? You can order them directly through their website or by sending an email.
