Umbria Blog | Biking along the Trasimeno Lake

August 15 is a bank holiday in Italy: Ferragosto. This national holiday celebrates the Assumption of the virgin Mary into heaven, the day when Catholics believe that God took the body of Jesus’ mother Mary into heaven to reunite with her son.

August is the traditional period for Italians to have their summer holidays. On August 15 many Italians go out for a picknick in a park or a barbecue in the garden. And many Italians make trips to the seaside or in the mountains to cool off.

This year on August 15 we decided to make a bike tour along the Trasimeno Lake with some friends. In the early morning we prepared our lunch and we started at 10.30 am with our mountainbike tour in Magione, Perugia.

Sant Arcangelo

From Magione we headed for Sant’Arcangelo, Castiglione del Lago and Tuoro sul Trasimeno. The cycle paths between Castiglione del Lago and Borghetto are a bit bumpy and narrow, but it was easy to pass by. Along the lake in Tuoro sul Trasimeno we found a wonderful picknick area for our small lunch.

After our picknick in Tuoro sul Trasimeno we headed for Passignano sul Trasimeno. Passignano is a lovely village along the lake. In the centre we found a small fountain where we filled our water bidon. The temperatures were about 30 degrees and biking without any drinks is not recommended. We needed fuel to continue. From Passignano we cycled to San Feliciano where it was crowded with people.

San Feliciano is only a few kilometres away from Magione where we parked our car. But, before getting there we had to make a huge climb to San Savino. San Savino is a small hill town along the lake.

The last kilomteres were only down hill to Magione. What a relief!

Bike Tour Lago Trasimeno

Lago Trasimeno

This cycle tour along the Trasimeno Lake is fantastic and is suitable for adults and for trained cyclists. The trail around the lake is quite flat and the total distance is about 70 km. A mountainbike is recommended. The path along the lake is fairly new and has been made especially for cyclists and tourists in Italy.

The picknick areas along the lake are wonderful. You do not need to get there by bike, but also on feet from Tuoro sul Trasimeno you’ll get there quite easily.

A  sportive activity to discover in Umbria I really enjoyed!

Umbria Blog | Wakeboard at Lake Trasimeno

Since a few years there is a wakeboard park at Lake Trasimeno.  During this time of the year that we are busy with our summer season, it also is the time that family and friends spend their holiday with us.  By now their children are young teenagers and we thought to try this wakeboard park with them. That wasn’t a bad idea: now that I am writing this we went once and are going again tomorrow.

The wake park (maybe park is a little bit exaggerated, but that’s what they call it) is easy to find along the road between Borghetto and Castiglione del Lago. Coming from the highway, you take the exit for Castiglione del Lago and will find the location within a kilometre, on the left hand side of the road with a large parking lot in front. There is a a restaurant here, so it is easy to recognize. Behind the restaurant is a small inner lake where you can practice wakeboarding.

It is suitable for children from 8 years onwards (Baby Wake), but personally I think that children a little bit older will enjoy this most. One does need some force and muscle to stand up on the water. A lifejacket and helmet is supplied to everybody and you’ll be pulled over the water via a cable. Raising yourself out of the water is not easy and making loops is something for experienced wakeboarders only. You may have an advantage if you are a snowboarder. We mainly plunged into the water. 😉

All in all it was a fun hour, if you are a group it’ll take more time. The first time you’ll pay €25 for an introduction and obligatory subscription, after that it is €12 each time. On the website are the opening hours, but it is better to call and agree a time first. Otherwise you risk that there is nobody present or a group practicing making you wait quite a while. Payment is in cash,  I didn’t spot a bank machine anywhere.

The restaurant has good pizza’s and other food. Plates are abundant. If you go wakeboarding late afternoon, you may want to stay here for dinner. The restaurant is called: La Sosta del Priore and opens in the evening from 7 pm. The address is: Strada Statale 75bis, 06061 Castiglione del Lago (PG). I didn’t find a website, but they are on Tripadvisor.

Umbria Blog | Pizzeria Calandrino in Castiglione del Lago

Marco comes from Rome and since this summer season he works as a waiter in pizzeria – osteria Calandrino in the centre of Castiglione del Lago. My apartment is situated just above this restaurant. When passing by the good smells stimulate your appetite  but in the four years I live here, I have never eaten in this restaurant… until today.

The cook is from Sicily and knows very well how to prepare the best fish, truffle and local meat dishes. His name is Rosario, a classic Sicilian name. Marco instead is a normal name you frequently hear in Italy. I have never had a real chat with him. He once helped me carrying the water bottles I had bought in the supermarket like a real gentlemen.

Restaurant Calandrino Castiglione del Lago

Today I decided to have lunch in Calandrino. I took a first course “linguine allo scoglio” with a good glass of Umbrian white wine, a Grechetto. Linguine looks like thick spaghetti which is good to combine with fish. On the terrace there were more people enjoying their Italian lunch. It is also possible to have pizza for lunch, but not for me: an Italian eats pizza for dinner, never for lunch.

Restaurant Calandrino Castiglione del Lago

Marco told me his story how he got in Castiglione del Lago. He is a “Romano”, but he lived for many years in London. He travelled around the world with his partner, but decided to return to Italy this spring. He missed his home, the sweat life in Italy “La Dolce Vita”.

I know Rosario ever since I live in Castiglione del Lago and now I finally tasted his pasta: I can recommend this restaurant to everybody. The smells coming from the restaurant are compatable with the dishes he prepares. Delicious! Calandrino is a nice and cosy osteria-pizzeria for those who love eating fish or other local dishes on an outside terrace in one of the most wonderful villages along the Trasimeno Lake, Castiglione del Lago.
