Everybody knows “pizza”. Maybe it is the most famous Italian dish in the world. Italians themselves love eating pizza. On every corner of the street you can get a slice, a “pizza al taglio”. The toppings on the pizza vary from fish to meat, from fresh fruit to only vegetables.
La Serra is a restaurant-pizzeria outside the city centre of Perugia. La Serra literally means greenhouse. It used to be a greenhouse: nowadays the restaurant has a long and narrow structure and is very large serving many guests. At the entrance are large craft beer brewers, though they do not seem to be in use. The restaurant does serve some special beers, though.
Often the restaurant is crowded with mainly local people. La Serra is not known by tourists because of its location outside the historical centre of Perugia. It is close to the football stadion.
Coming here for the first time you’ll be surprised by the size of the pizza. One pizza takes two plates to serve! It is hard to imagine finishing this mega pizza, but no worries. Within minutes you’ll finish the first half. It is a very thin pizza and not difficult to digest. You’ll love it!
The menu of the mega pizza is variable. On the placemat menu is a list of the “Super Mega Pizza Speciale”. But the menu also offers classics like the Pizza Margherita or the Pizza 4 Formaggi. For children there is a “baby pizza” which has the normal pizza size. If you don’t feel like having a mega pizza, the restaurant also offers good pasta and meat dishes.
If you really can’t get to the end of your pizza, you can ask a take away pizza box. Don’t hesitate to ask for a box, many people do!

Last summer we visited Alessandro from Il Mulino holiday apartments for new pictures and a short interview. Alessandro is the owner of this estate and together with his brother they run a farm.
The spacious apartments share a swimming pool amidst vineyards and olive groves. There also is a paddle pool for the smallest children. Il Mulino is very centrally located, between Bastardo and the wine village of Montefalco.
We asked Alessandro why people should come to his place for a holiday in Umbria. He also recommends an enoteca in the historical centre of Montefalco: L’Alchimista in Montefalco. Curious why you should eat there? Watch this:
In the second half of June there is the Mercato delle Gaite in Bevagna, at a stone’s throw from Il Mulino. An evocation of medieval times and a real Italian experience. We’ve already written a blog about this wonderful feast.
From Il Mulino one can also start some bike tours in the area. The hills aren’t too steep making it possible also for the somewhat less experienced to make a bike tour.
Il Mulino is centrally located in Umbria and it has an ideal position to explore the green region of Umbria. Assisi, Spello, Perugia, but also Foligno and Trevi are all interesting places and easy to reach.
Already looking forward to your next summer holiday in 2017? Alessandro offers a 5% discount if you book one of his holiday apartments before the 31st of December 2016.
Last year I’ve met some families from Belgium who stay in Montone, Umbria @ Montone Rental. It is one of their favorite holiday destinations in Italy. This agriturismo has a total of 5 rental units with shared pool, barbecue and tennis court.
In August 2015 we went together for a wine tasting in Montepulciano where we drank a few glasses of quality wines before eating at the sagra in a small village close to Montepulciano, Tuscany. A wonderful experience.
On a Wednesday during their holiday they always come to Castiglione del Lago for the local market and for some fishing along the lake. Also this time I’ve made a reservation for them at the restaurant Le Scalette. In this restaurant especially the local fish cuisine is delicious!
It is a real family restaurant “Le Scalette”. The mamma is the chef cook and the son and daughter in law do the rest at the restaurant. When you’re around don’t forget to pass by for a lunch or dinner. Really recommended!
The owners of Le Scalette are from Castiglione del Lago. They are more than friendly. They told me that Le Scalette was mentioned in one of most important restaurant guides of the world: Routard. I can’t remember the edition, 2015 or 2016, but this guide is comparable with the Michelin guide for restaurants.

My Belgian friends enjoyed their holiday in Umbria, and I enjoyed meeting them in Castiglione del Lago for the second time. One year has passed by… already!
Watch this interview with Steven about Umbria, Villa in Umbria and Montone Rental. During their holiday they went to Gubbio, Assisi but also to Fano at the Adriatic coast. As you can see, there is so much to explore in and around Umbria!
