Umbria Blog | Montefalco and Giro d’Italia

Like every year around this time, the Giro d’Italia is going through Italy. On Tuesday May 16, 2017 is the 10th round of the Giro, a hilly trail in Umbria starting in Foligno. The first cyclist will start at 1:00 pm in Foligno next to the Duomo, and the last cyclist will finish in Montefalco at 5:15 pm, just outside the city walls. Before arriving in Montefalco the cyclists pass by Bevagna, a beautiful medieval village.

During the Giro d’Italia Montefalco is coloured pink wherever you look. Even the wine bottles outside are pink. Pink is the most important colour of the Giro d’Italia. Various activities are being organised, such as wine tasting, performances, DJ’s, and theme dinners in taverns to celebrate the Giro d’Italia. It is a lively atmosphere already before the arrival of the bicycle caravan.

The locals and the region Umbria itself pay a lot of attention to this event. More information about the Giro d’Italia you can get at the local tourist information or download the program from the website.

Federico II is a restaurant and bar in the centre of Montefalco. The owner of the restaurant is Roberta. She told me that Montefalco will be crowded the coming days. Federico II is an ideal place for an appetizer, pizza, pasta or meat dishes. They serve good wines, like the famous Sagrantino wine. I had a wonderful lunch with gnocchi al Sagrantino and a glass of Sagrantino wine 🙂 Outstanding!

Roberta also is the owner of A Montefalco, a residence with apartments and swimming pool. It is at only 10 minutes walking from the historical centre of Montefalco. Roberta and her family own a number of restaurants and bars in Montefalco and in Foligno. This family is a real Umbrian family offering hospitality to their guests and showing them Umbria the way they have always known it.

Umbria Blog | Restaurant Pizzeria La Serra

Everybody knows “pizza”. Maybe it is the most famous Italian dish in the world. Italians themselves love eating pizza. On every corner of the street you can get a slice, a “pizza al taglio”. The toppings on the pizza vary from fish to meat, from fresh fruit to only vegetables.

La Serra is a restaurant-pizzeria outside the city centre of Perugia. La Serra literally means greenhouse. It used to be a greenhouse: nowadays the restaurant has a long and narrow structure and is very large serving many guests. At the entrance are large craft beer brewers, though they do not seem to be in use. The restaurant does serve some special beers, though.

Often the restaurant is crowded with mainly local people. La Serra is not known by tourists because of its location outside the historical centre of Perugia. It is close to the football stadion.

Coming here for the first time you’ll be surprised by the size of the pizza. One pizza takes two plates to serve! It is hard to imagine finishing this mega pizza, but no worries. Within minutes you’ll finish the first half. It is a very thin pizza and not difficult to digest. You’ll love it!

The menu of the mega pizza is variable. On the placemat menu is a list of the “Super Mega Pizza Speciale”. But the menu also offers classics like the Pizza Margherita or the Pizza 4 Formaggi. For children there is a “baby pizza” which has the normal pizza size. If you don’t feel like having a mega pizza, the restaurant also offers good pasta and meat dishes.

If you really can’t get to the end of your pizza, you can ask a take away pizza box. Don’t hesitate to ask for a box, many people do!

Umbria Blog | Agriturismo il Mulino

Last summer we visited Alessandro from Il Mulino holiday apartments for new pictures and a short interview. Alessandro is the owner of this estate and together with his brother they run a farm.

The spacious apartments share a swimming pool amidst vineyards and olive groves. There also is a paddle pool for the smallest children. Il Mulino is very centrally located, between Bastardo and the wine village of Montefalco.

We asked Alessandro why people should come to his place for a holiday in  Umbria. He also recommends an enoteca in the historical centre of Montefalco: L’Alchimista in Montefalco. Curious why you should eat there? Watch this:

In the second half of June there is the Mercato delle Gaite in Bevagna, at a stone’s throw from Il Mulino. An evocation of medieval times and a real Italian experience. We’ve already written a blog about this wonderful feast.

From Il Mulino one can also start some bike tours in the area. The hills aren’t too steep making it possible also for the somewhat less experienced to make a bike tour.

Il Mulino is centrally located in Umbria and it has an ideal position to explore the green region of Umbria. Assisi, Spello, Perugia, but also Foligno and Trevi are all interesting places and easy to reach.

Already looking forward to your next summer holiday in 2017? Alessandro offers a 5% discount if you book one of his holiday apartments before the 31st of December 2016.
