Umbria Blog | Montefalco and Giro d’Italia

Like every year around this time, the Giro d’Italia is going through Italy. On Tuesday May 16, 2017 is the 10th round of the Giro, a hilly trail in Umbria starting in Foligno. The first cyclist will start at 1:00 pm in Foligno next to the Duomo, and the last cyclist will finish in Montefalco at 5:15 pm, just outside the city walls. Before arriving in Montefalco the cyclists pass by Bevagna, a beautiful medieval village.

During the Giro d’Italia Montefalco is coloured pink wherever you look. Even the wine bottles outside are pink. Pink is the most important colour of the Giro d’Italia. Various activities are being organised, such as wine tasting, performances, DJ’s, and theme dinners in taverns to celebrate the Giro d’Italia. It is a lively atmosphere already before the arrival of the bicycle caravan.

The locals and the region Umbria itself pay a lot of attention to this event. More information about the Giro d’Italia you can get at the local tourist information or download the program from the website.

Federico II is a restaurant and bar in the centre of Montefalco. The owner of the restaurant is Roberta. She told me that Montefalco will be crowded the coming days. Federico II is an ideal place for an appetizer, pizza, pasta or meat dishes. They serve good wines, like the famous Sagrantino wine. I had a wonderful lunch with gnocchi al Sagrantino and a glass of Sagrantino wine 🙂 Outstanding!

Roberta also is the owner of A Montefalco, a residence with apartments and swimming pool. It is at only 10 minutes walking from the historical centre of Montefalco. Roberta and her family own a number of restaurants and bars in Montefalco and in Foligno. This family is a real Umbrian family offering hospitality to their guests and showing them Umbria the way they have always known it.

Umbria Blog | Archery tournament in Todi

During the weekend of March 25-26 there was an Archery Tournament in Todi: Todi la Città degli Arcieri. Now you wonder what’s so special about that? It is very special: all archers are in medieval outfit!

It is a serious tournament with archers from all over Italy and all come rigorously dressed in a medieval outfit, to the smallest detail. Throughout the small town there are several stands where the archers have to shoot at different goals, also moving goals.

Todi, like many towns in Umbria, has been very prosperous during the 13th and 14th century and this is still easily recognizable looking at the buildings and infrastructure. Hence, why it was very special to see these archers all dressed up, they fitted perfectly well in the surrounding decor.

During the tournament there are several activities being organized: historical flag wavers, medieval dances, special guided tours and a market with typical local products. The weather was great and the atmosphere very relaxed.

Umbria Blog | White Truffle market in Città di Castello

Each year at the end of October Città di Castello celebrates the white truffle with a market dedicated to this precious delicacy. From October 28 to November 1, 2016 was the 37th edition of this truffle market, Il Tartufo Bianco. One sells not only white truffle from Umbria but also delicacies from other regions in Italy like herbs, Sicilian cannoli, olives from Puglia and much more, often accompanied by local wines.

Città di Castello is a lovely town, situated 50 km north from Perugia. In the historical center one find tiny streets and a pleasant square with bars and cafés.

North Umbria is known for its white and black truffle. I find truffle one of the best ingredients in my food, hence I often use truffle for pasta sauce, in risotto or for meat dishes. Truffle sauces are not made with only truffles, but are mixed with different flavors.

Black truffles, and especially white truffles, aren’t cheap. Bruno from Giuliani Tartufi explains us in this video that they sell the best truffles for an attractive price. Feel free to visit their website for more information!
