Umbria Blog | White Truffle market in Città di Castello

Each year at the end of October Città di Castello celebrates the white truffle with a market dedicated to this precious delicacy. From October 28 to November 1, 2016 was the 37th edition of this truffle market, Il Tartufo Bianco. One sells not only white truffle from Umbria but also delicacies from other regions in Italy like herbs, Sicilian cannoli, olives from Puglia and much more, often accompanied by local wines.

Città di Castello is a lovely town, situated 50 km north from Perugia. In the historical center one find tiny streets and a pleasant square with bars and cafés.

North Umbria is known for its white and black truffle. I find truffle one of the best ingredients in my food, hence I often use truffle for pasta sauce, in risotto or for meat dishes. Truffle sauces are not made with only truffles, but are mixed with different flavors.

Black truffles, and especially white truffles, aren’t cheap. Bruno from Giuliani Tartufi explains us in this video that they sell the best truffles for an attractive price. Feel free to visit their website for more information!

Pasta Amatriciana for Amatrice

Every day in the newspaper, or on television we still see images and interviews with journalists, politicians and locals about the earthquake on 24 August. Amatrice, Accumoli and Arquata del Tronto are destroyed. Also buildings in Norcia, Umbria have been damaged. Many people who survived the earthquake live now in tents, but will soon move to hotels and institutions before winter sets in.

In many restaurants in Italy, and in Umbria, you can order a pasta “Amatriciana”. Amatriciana is a typical pasta-dish originally from the village Amatrice based on tomatoes, pecorino, guanciale (cured pork cheek), white wine, onion and peperoncino. Amatriciana is prepared with spaghetti or also penne (short pasta).

On Sunday October 2, 2016 I participated in the half marathon of Foligno, Umbria. We started and finished in the centre of Foligno, and in between ran through the wonderful Umbrian countryside around Foligno. The trail is flat and also ideal for walking or biking.

Course: Garmin Connect – Foligno half marathon

This race is every year on the last day of the event I Primi d’Italia. I Primi d’Italia is a popular food festival that focuses on “primi piatti” (polenta, rice, pasta and soup). During this event many top chefs all over Italy come over for food tastings, cooking demonstrations and cooking courses. It attracts a lot of visitors. Have a look at our blog about I Primi D’Italia.

I finished the race at midday and I hunkered for a good pasta. I decided to go to the “Villaggio della Amatriciana” for a Pasta Amatriciana. At the festival there were about 13 “food villages” for tastings. I could also go to the “Villaggio del Riso” or the “Villaggio della Polenta” but I felt that a little contribution for the rebuilding of the earthquake area’s was appropriate. I decided to spend my money for charity, for Amatrice!

The Pasta Amatriciana I had was delicious, I ran in the half marathon of Foligno, and gave my humble contribution for charity! I returned home satisfied.

Umbria Blog | Feast of San Lorenzo

Each August on the 10th is the feast of San Lorenzo “calici di stelle”. An evening of celebrations throughout Italy. This feast is not well known outside Italy. In this period of August, and especially around the 12th of August rather than the 10th, is the best time to admire the shooting stars, also called the tears of San Lorenzo.

Calici di Stelle

When you see a falling star, you can make a wish and hope your wish will come true. To honor the saint San Lorenzo many festivities are held in villages, in the mountains or on the beach. Some people watch the sky during the night with a good glass of wine in their hands, and some people have diner together. For everybody August 10th is a magical summer night.
