Cortona in winter

At a stone’s throw from Lake Trasimeno in Umbria is the Tuscan town of Cortona. For many people abroad this town has become known by the book of Francis Mayes, Under the Tuscan Sun. Living in the area I wasn’t too impressed by it, but it attracted a lot of visitors to Cortona. At the time of the film shooting I worked nearby Cortona. The mother of the family, like many other people from Cortona, participated as an extra. She was quite upset because she was supposed to dress in simple cloths, dark colors and no jewelry. “People from Cortona do not dress like that!”, is what she said.

Cortona has a long history going back to the Etruscan times and is a cute little town worthwhile visiting when you are in the area. In summer terraces are out, there are some good restaurants and it has a lively atmosphere.

After lots of bad weather last week, Sunday was a sunny day and we decided to go for a drink in Cortona. I made some pictures of the town. You can view them in a gallery by just clicking on one of the pictures.

  1. I have only been to Cortona for a short visit driving from Florence to Macerata. We had lunch and a short look around. I loved it and promised myself that one day I will return. Thank you for the lovely reminder
