Maybe the wine production in Umbria is limited but the wine itself is excellent. The prices are good, Umbria is a great place for wine lovers! Orvieto’s white wines and the Montefalco Sagrantino wines are some of Italy’s best known wines.
This time we headed out to the south of Umbria, cantina Ponteggia in San Gemini. A place close to the city of Terni and the Marmore Waterfalls. Together with Umbriabeecoming we organized a wine tasting-lunch event.
Corado is a wine sommelier, and he guided us through the wine making process, from the grapes in the field to the bottled wines. We learned about the different plants, the process of wine making and had a glimpse at the cellar with the oak barrels where the better wines are kept.
After the tour we had lunch combined with wine tasting.
Years ago, the owners of the Cantina Ponteggia decided to give their wines names of relatives: Anita (white wine), Eva (rosé), Beatrice (red sangiovese wine) and Lorenzo (red Cabernet wine).
The menu consisted of an antipasto of bruschette and different cold cuts followed by spaghetti carbonara (pasta with eggs, guanciale-speck, pepper and pecorino cheese). After the primo we had some cheeses and homemade tozzetti combined with the Cabernet Sauvignon “Lorenzo”. Delightful!
Cantina Ponteggia near Terni is a wonderful winery. It offers breathtaking views over the vineyard, the hills and all the surroundings. It was a fun and enjoyable experience for us and for our guests. It is a great opportunity to experience Umbria in a different way!
